The fishing gear unavoidably affects quality of the catch in one way or another, but comparison can be difficult because selectivity of the gear and its impact on the catch differs.  Line caught fish is for example generally the freshest material available, but condition factor is however often poorer than when using different types of fishing gear, such as bottom trawl or gillnet.  Regardless of which fishing gear is being used, it is essential to apply them “correctly” in order to provide the best available quality catch.  Trawlers for example need to limit how much time each haul lasts and how much volume is allowed in each haul.
