Choosing a favourable fishing ground can affect the quality of the raw material.  Temperature can for example affect quality; head proportion and fillet yield can differ from one fishing ground to another; and defects such as gaping and number of parasites (nematodes) can differ between fishing grounds and seasons.  Recent studies have shown that it is possible to map the fishing grounds in regards to these quality factors, enabling vessel operators to choose the best available fishing grounds at each time.  Resulting from these studies, decision support software has been developed, called FisHmark, which takes into account all available data on quality factors, operational costs and revenues.  It applies statistical optimisation on available data to identify the best option.
